The theatre with perfect acoustics, and the first great healing sanctuary of the Western world.
In the middle of a valley of pine and cypress stands something that has remained almost unchanged for 2,300 years: the theatre built by Polykleitos the Younger around 340 BCE.
Beside it, an entire sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius — the foremost healing centre of the ancient world, where people came from across the Mediterranean to be cured.

The Temple of Asclepius
The sacred heart of the site. Here they made sacrifices, here they dreamed their cure.

The Abaton
The dormitory where the sick slept, waiting for the god's prophetic dreams.

Site of the Asklepieia — games held every four years, much like the Olympics.

The museum
Small but essential. Surgical tools, votive plaques, and the remedies given to patients.
The summer festival.
Every July and August, the theatre becomes again what it was built for: a performance space. The Athens-Epidaurus Festival stages ancient tragedies and comedies every Friday and Saturday night.
If you're coming in summer, book tickets early — it sells out fast. Ask us at reception which production is worth seeing and which performance is unmissable.

35 minutes' drive from the campsite. Through Lygourio village. Good parking at the entrance.
